ABOUT MIKE

Bicycles have always been a huge part of my life. I was a kid on a farm with a yellow banana seat girls bike
learning powerslides while going down a huge dirt driveway, then mom moved us to the big city
(Minneapolis), and I discovered BMX(freestyle and dirt track). Road and MTB racing were the natural
evolution as a teen and 20 something. I supported my passion by wrenching, odd jobbing and I even
participated in architecture school along the way. When I could afford it, I would drive myself and friends to
the races in a big block ’69 Dodge Charger and do burnouts in the parking lot, thinking that burning fossil
fuels and rubber had something to do with my race results!
The culture of the bicycling world and the lure of the open road led me to Moab for the first time in 1989.
Can you imagine Porcupine Rim on a Stumpjumper with a Scott Unishock and drop bars?  I can’t even
believe it myself.  It is here that I eventually realized that my life experiences could be collectively put to use
and called Mountain Bike Guiding. It has been another dream come true meeting Maggie and having the
opportunity to continue on my path of constant incremental improvement. I believe the Japanese call it
Kaizen.

I am a cyclist.
Bicycles led me here,  I will lead from here by bicycle.

Some every day thoughts include:

The bicycle can make the world a better place.  Stay on trail or stay home!  I can fix it  (countless bicycles, a
couple dozen cars & trucks, and a camper or two).  Save our singletrack!
I can build it  (e.g. Responsible use
of sustainable trails, friends, bikes, trucks, etc.)  Keep It Singletrack Stupid!  I love you.  Crashing DOES NOT
make you a better rider, bringing yourself to the edge and back does (and you get to ride tomorrow).
Follow me!

I believe the best way to get to know someone is by going for a bike ride and enjoying food and music with
one another. You should also know that I enjoy many different kinds of music, foods, and rides. I feel this is a
kind of blessing because it allows me to relate and actually appreciate different perspectives from many
walks of life.

If you are looking for a cycling guide who will leave the cool guy ego out of the equation and actually
spend quality time listening and sharing what he’s learned, I am that cycling guide, and I am here for you!

P.S. I would like to thank all of my friends for their support over the years, believing in me and keeping me on
track. Hopefully we can share some trail time soon!
